Interview: How YoungWoman breaks the rules – and the dance floor.

You’ve got such a unique style that blends genres effortlessly – what drives your decisions between them when you’re behind the decks?

YoungWoman: Thanks! I think it all comes down to who I am as a person:

I’m OBSESSED with making music sound bigger than it actually is: so if a track has a strong bassline I’m not satisfied until I find a way to make it sound even stronger. So rather than playing one “good” track after the other, I like to stack them on top of each other in a way that can make us feel something!

I also don’t like restraining myself or what I can do so in my process I will not veto any idea until I’ve tried it once (or twice). This has really given me the freedom to think of music in terms of energy rather than genres which is pretty fun cause then the possibilities are just endless.

Also, I’m easily bored so I don’t like to play one track for too long or play the same drop twice so I’m always looking for ways to change how the track sounds and the more I can do that in a sneaky way the happier I am with it 🙂

Is there a common thread that connects the different genres you play?

YoungWoman: Good question.. I think the common thread is that I REALLY REALLY wanna make people dance! I like to think of a YoungWoman set as an invitation to lose control for a couple of hours. So I’m always looking for music that has that compelling element, that lil something that really pushes you to move.

Then I’ll spend a lot of time researching not only how these different tracks can blend together but also the perfect moment when that can happen in a way that doesn’t disrupt the energy too much and keeps on pushing people to dance even more!

A good friend, Runningman, put it nicely saying that I keep on ramping up the energy as if there is a glass roof that people think can’t get higher, but then I find a way to break it and by doing so we all dance even crazier. And I think that sums up the YoungWoman effect nicely 🙂

What’s a genre you love to play, but that people might not expect from you?

YoungWoman: I think jazz might be one of those genres I don’t dare to play out but would love to at some point! Mainly cause I cannot wrap my head around how any of it would work together. Electronic music is still quite structured but with jazz I feel you’d have to let go any mixing techniques and just all the instruments figure it out by themselves
