Interview: Wrec ‘A Collaboration in Controlled Chaos’

wRec is what happens when two worlds collide—hyper and deep, chaotic and precise. In this interview, they talk about building live sets together, embracing disjointedness, and chasing the thrill of not knowing exactly where the music will go next.

POING: CAN YOU TELL US THE STORY BEHIND YOUR NEW COLLABORATION “WREC”? HOW DID IT COME TO LIFE?

It’s about sharing two very different sonic worlds with each other, how that can be messy sometimes, and we like that mess in between.

We started spending more time at each other’s gigs, and shared different creative processes, so we wanted to see what would happen if we tried to merge the hyper with the deeper sounds.

There’s a shared love for disjointedness and chaos-turned-order-turned-chaos that is circular but we end up at a different place each time. We found that so exciting because we put so much pressure on our solo projects.

POING: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE SOUND OF THIS COLLABORATION, AND DOES IT DIFFER FROM YOUR SOLO PROJECTS?

We think it’s kind of funny that in our collaborative project we started mimicking each other.

One was remaking the sounds the other likes and vice versa. We are learning a lot from each other. Some are just frankenstein’s monsters: pop structures mixed with sound design from classic dance genres, and the other way around. We’re finding a middle ground between the digital gloss and analog warmth; merging crystal clear saw waves with sampled dusty records; finding something contradictory and pushing it to the limit.

POING: WHAT’S NEXT FOR wRec, AND WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOUR SET AT POING?

We are finishing off an EP that we are really excited to share. We want to continue building live-sets with each other, and continue DJ-ing as a pair. You can expect lots of twists and turns from us, think mixing the gritty club sound design of De Grandi with one of DeBasement’s thrashing bangers.

A dizzying journey with moments to let loose and go crazy.
